Bronte's people are drawn from a diverse range of backgrounds by design. The aim being to bring originality back into the investment process, and avoid the group-think that has plagued the industry.
John Hempton - Founder & CIO
John has been a financial markets professional since 1999 and is Chief Investment Officer, Founder and co-owner at Bronte.
John was Head of Financials at Platinum Asset Management and its youngest partner. After Platinum listed in 2007, John started Bronte Capital in 2009.
John believes that sitting in Australia, out of time-zone with most of Bronte's larger Long/Short competitors, and avoiding broker research, enables Bronte to have a fresh and unique view of companies.
Simon Maher - Founder & CEO
Simon has over 20 years diverse commercial experience, primarily as the former CEO and Managing Director of Southern Hydro but also as an investment banker for Alternate Energy at Babcock & Brown. Simon developed Southern Hydro into Australia’s leading asset backed energy trader.
Simon has been CEO of Bronte since inception, but is also COO and CCO for the firm with the assistance of Georgina Taylor.
As COO / CCO, Simon monitors and services Bronte's Fund flows and risk / concentration limits and ensures compliance in all jurisdictions.
Dr John Graham - Analyst
John sits on the investment committee of Bronte where he provides the complementary insights of a polymath.
John has a PhD in Pure Mathematics and University Medal from the University of Sydney. He retains an abiding interest in representation theory. He has over 15 years of experience in commercial and investment analysis in the energy industry and infrastructure finance since leaving academia.
John validates and optimizes the heuristics that underpin Bronte's investment strategy.
Petter Ingemarsson - Analyst
Petter sits on the investment committee of Bronte and focuses primarily on the short portfolio.
Prior to Bronte, Petter worked in banking and consulted for regulatory payments organisations. Petter has an MSc from Stockholm School of Economics and an MBA from University of Technology, Sydney.
Kate Pike - Corporate Relations
Kate has worked in financial markets for the past 15 years and has recently joined Bronte to work as a Corporate Relations consultant. Kate joined the team, having worked in the London based Morgan Stanley Corporate Access team for the past 9 years. Prior to that, she worked in the Australian market in various sales and execution roles.
Kate is responsible for maintaining dialogue with existing corporate shareholdings, forming relationships with potential holdings and managing sell side resources.
Andrew Reeves - Analyst & Distribution
Andrew has been in investment banking and financial markets since 2004 and recently joined Bronte to assist with fund distribution. Andrew also sits on the investment team.
Prior to Bronte, Andrew worked in Hong Kong within Deutsche Bank advising hedge funds on market neutral strategies within AxJ. During his 10 years in Asia with DB, Andrew's responsibilities included Head of Asia Relative Value Sales & Trading and Research, where he helped new funds generate uncorrelated returns.
More recently, Andrew ran Hedge Fund Sales for Bank of America Merrill Lynch in Australia.
Luke Ryves - Analyst
Luke sits on the investment committee of Bronte and brings almost a decade of experience as a scientist/engineer to our analysis.
Luke has a PhD in physics and University Medal from the University of Sydney, working on materials science and plasma deposition systems. Prior to Bronte, Luke was applying his technical ability at venture capital-backed technology companies in the medical device and solar photovoltaic industries.
Luke primarily focuses on our Long Investments.
David Sachs - Analyst
David sits on the investment committee of Bronte and focuses primarily on the short portfolio and the construction of Bronte’s unique person database.
David has over 15 years experience in tech-focused buy side firms as an investor at Trident Capital, Redpoint Ventures and hedge fund Connective Capital. David has an AB Harvard, an MBA from Wharton (Palmer Scholar), and is a CFA charterholder.
David leads Bronte’s effort to systematically identify companies that have a predisposition to over-state, mis-state or simply over-promise in their results that yields a rich source of potential companies to short.
Thomas Spence - Analyst
Thomas sits on the investment committee of Bronte. His responsibilities include fundamental research to assist with both the long and short book.
Thomas joined Bronte in 2020 as a graduate following an internship with the firm. He is a High Distinction graduate of Bachelor of Commerce and Bachelor of Science at the University of New South Wales and a Dean's List recipient in both faculties.
Georgie Taylor - Head of Operations & Compliance
Georgie has over 20 years experience in a number of boutique and global fund managers and currently runs Operations & Compliance for Bronte. She has an extensive knowledge of equities, settlements, corporate actions and portfolio management systems. Georgie is responsible for managing the day to day operations at Bronte, ensuring deliverables are met in a timely manner. She also ensures our compliance with the AFSL and SEC licence conditions, including managing policies and procedures, risk controls, record keeping and monitoring programs. Further, Georgie manages all relationships with external stakeholders including the Administrators, Auditors, Legal teams and the Fund's Boards.
Michael Walker - Senior Data Engineer
Michael has worked in banking, government, and various start-ups over the past 12 years. He is passionate about all things data and analytics.
Michael primarily focuses on systematising the short portfolio and automation within Bronte.
James Wood - Analyst
James sits on the investment committee of Bronte and brings his experience as a research physicist to both the long and short book.
James has a PhD in physics from the University of Melbourne. Prior to joining Bronte, James was conducting post-doctoral research at the University of Basel in Switzerland where he applied quantum physics to the challenge of nanoscale magnetic field detection.
